Sprained Ankle
Sprained ankles can be very painful.  Sprained ankle symptoms are swelling, bruising and pain.  Sprained ankle treatment involves reducing pain and swelling of the affected ankle and introducing ankle rehabilitation exercises to strengthen associated muscles.

Sprained ankle healing time depends on how bad the injury was and how much treatment you have to speed up the healing process.  Recovery time is different with individuals and younger people for example will heal faster than the elderly.  Runners who sustain a sprained ankle will be unable to run for about 6 weeks.

The sprained ankle is the most common cause of pain in the ankle. The most common ligament sprain is the inversion sprain which generally damages the anterior talo-fibular ligament.
This usually occurs when the foot is plantar flexed (toes pointing down) as it allows more inversion at the ankle joint.

The "twisted ankle" or "turned ankle" may tear the ankle ligaments resulting in rapid bruising and swelling of the foot.

If the stress occurs when the foot is flat and at right angles then the  calcaneo-fibular ligament will be compromised as it receives the stretch force.

If ankle ligaments are sprained then there may be bruising and swelling around the ankle joint. This is very painful and walking will be difficult.  Running is normally out of the question and rest must be taken to allow time for recovery.

It has been stated that it is worse to sprain an ankle than to fracture it and this indeed may be true.  Ligaments have a poor blood supply compared to bone and as the materials used for repair travel via the bloodstream then the fractured ankle will heal faster than the torn ligaments.

Avulsion is a term that describes a pulling away of the ligament upon the bone where it is attached.  Sometimes small splinters of bone will come away when this occurs.

The cause of ankle sprains are numerous but most common is placing the foot on uneven ground causing the ankle to turn outwards (inversion).  The balance is generally lost and full weight bearing produces excessive force on the twisted ankle resulting in the ligaments giving way and often followed by a fall.

Treatment for the injured ankle will involve reducing pain and swelling and healing the injured ligaments.
The proprioceptors are often compromised and will need retraining to allow the runner to recover fully.
Balance and strength restoration are very important in the rehabilitation phase of the injury as failure to do this will result in further ankle sprains and weak ankles.
Solihull Birmingham and Tamworth and Lichfield Runners who sustain a sprained ankle, can get help from Atlas Sports Injury Clinics Sports Physiotherapists.

Sprained ankles damage ankle ligaments which lead to pain, bruising and swelling of the ankle joint.

This in turn means often it is impossible to put your weight on the affected foot and running is out of the question.

Runners training for the London Marathon need speedy treatment if they sustain an ankle sprain because they will generally be slow to heal.
