Hamstring Strain
Solihull and Tamworth sports physiotherapists at Atlas Sports Injury Clinics regularly see pulled hamstring muscles.  Not so common in distance runners but in athletics and football this back of the thigh strain can stop you running

Hamstring strains
, hamstring tear or pulled hamstring all describe damage to the muscle at the back of the thigh.

Often located in the centre of the muscle the injury can range from mild to severe and will stop you running.  Runners who fail to warm up properly generally suffer hamstring strains as do sprinters and hurdlers.

Treatment is the same as any muscle injury and depends how soon it is addressed.  As soon as the injury is felt you should ice the area and rest it which restricts unwanted internal bleeding. Sports massage will help speed up the healing time.
A torn hamstring generally heals well if treated early, but if left will heal with unwanted scar tissue tethering to adjacent muscle fibres.  This leaves a lump over the injury and may cause further problems when resuming training.

Footballers suffer hamstring tears due to the quick explosive nature of their running. A combination of cryotherapy ice treatment, electrotherapy, soft tissue manipulation and contrast bathing will soon get you back running again.

Hamstring stretching should be an integral part of a runners training and marathon runners who have to put in a lot of high mileage should always stretch after a run.  Stretching the hamstrings will prevent unwanted shortening and thus reduce the risk of injury such as a pulled hamstring muscle.
