Gait assessment or running gait analysis requires a biomechanical assessment before any suggestion of orthosis is prescribed.  Orthotics are often given out at the first signs of running injury with no regard to the needs of the patient.  A video gait analysis will determine your gait whilst running and highlight any running faults.

Accurate diagnosis is required before attempting to alter lower limb biomechanics and injuries can occur to runners who wear ill fitting or incorrectly prescribed orthotics. Flat feet and dropped arches will result in foot pain, ankle pain and knee pain

Atlas Running Injury Clinic  in Solihull, Birmingham offers advice and evaluations of your prescription orthotics should you need help with London Marathon training injuries.  We also have a Running Injury Clinic in Tamworth, Staffordshire which have sports physiotherapists and a sports podiatrist to help you.

A Podiatric Biomechanical assessment refers to the analysis of the foot and leg function and the diagnosis of any functional problems or abnormalities.

A biomechanical assessment or biomechanical evaluation involves making a thorough examination of the lower limbs. This will involve a non weight bearing and weight bearing examination.

Non weight bearing examination: This will focus on assessing joint range of movement, muscle strength and flexibility.

Weight bearing examination: This will focus on the position and alignment of the body and the relationship of the foot to the ground during stance.

Assessment is made of leg length, pelvic alignment, hip range of motion, knee range of motion and knee stability, ankle range of motion together with the angle of joint relationship between the foot and the lower leg and the separate joints within the foot itself.

An assessment will often include observation of the patient walking and/or running on the road or a motorised treadmill.  Video Gait Analysis is available at Atlas Sports Injury Clinics.

Aching feet and painful lower limb problems can be avoided. The cause of many such problems is often due to misalignment of the joints which often results in soft tissue stress affecting the foot or lower limb. This can lead to common problems which include:

Foot/lower limb fatigue
Shin splints
Knee ligament sprains
Patella mal-tracking
Runner’s knee
Jumper’s knee
